The Toronto Metabolic Clinic offers treatment for various conditions through dietary intervention, under the supervision of a dedicated and well-trained medical team, including family physicians, and specialists. Our dieting program is based on intermittent fasting and low carbohydrate/ketogenic consumption, and offered in partnership with Dr. Jason Fung's The Fasting Method.
This is an OHIP-based service with additional interdisciplinary services, such as registered dietitian and naturopathic medicine. Dietitian and naturopathic services are not covered under OHIP. We provide one-on-one support, as well as group sessions.

What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Intermittent fasting is the voluntary withholding of food for a period of time and should not to be confused with starvation, which is involuntary. Intermittent fasting forces the body to access its stores of body fat and burn them for energy. In patients with type 2 diabetes, fasting will force the body to burn off the high blood sugars. This provides a natural solution to reversing type 2 diabetes rather than relying on medications.
Insulin is a key hormone that promotes the storage of food energy as sugar or body fat. Intermittent fasting works predominantly by allowing insulin levels to fall during the fasting period. The falling insulin level signals the body to use some of the stored sugar and fat for energy, thus providing a natural, time-honoured remedy for obesity and metabolic problems including obesity, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, fatty liver and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
Intermittent fasting has recently gained widespread attention due to its long history of use and stunning success. Harvard University's Dr. Deborah Wexler recently agrees that, "There is evidence to suggest that the circadian rhythm fasting approach...is effective"

Dietary Program
Our dietary program is based upon Dr. Fung's teachings and approaches. Our special diet program is not a calorie counting one, as not all calories are equally fattening. We provide educational materials and point clients to informative resources freely available online.
Our Inspiration
Dr. Fung is a nephrologist, a specialist in the treatment of kidney disease. Metabolic disease, including type 2 diabetes is by far and away the main cause of kidney disease, and it is a reversible condition, but not with medications, only through lifestyle changes. Everybody knew that weight loss was the key to getting better, but losing weight was difficult. To address the root cause of all these related medical issues. Using his research, he developed the best dietary approaches to help patients.
